HEAL’s community empowerment model wouldn’t work without the incredibly talented, trained, and experienced health workers it employs. HEAL’s operations in India are run entirely by those from the local communities. Supervised by Dr. Meera Khader, HEAL’s India staff works full-time in communities where HEAL operates.

Meera was asked to join HEAL in 2004, when she began managing a team with responsibility for 17 different communities. Since that time, she has been instrumental in HEAL’s work. She currently serves as the organization’s Director and her responsibilities include monitoring, coordination, training, lobbying, and advocacy for all of HEAL’s day to day operations. Meera is very well qualified to lead our team in India. She co-founded a volunteer organization known as SAPID in 1986 and began working with HEAL in 2004. For almost 30 years, Meera has worked tirelessly to abolish impoverishment in India’s down trodden rural and tribal areas. Her focus has been on empowering the rural and tribal people to develop community cohesion and confidence in tackling the challenges they face. She earned her pre-doctorate & doctorate in sociology and her post graduate degree in law. She is a recipient of the Best Women social worker award (2009, 2010 & 2011) and the Mother Theresa Award (2010 & 2011).

Information about where you grew up, where you studied

I was born in Hyderabad, my mother belonged to the schedule caste and my father was a Muslim. My father got married again to my maternal aunt and I saw my mother struggling to maintain me, my sister and my brother. I completed my schooling from Model High school Secunderabad with English as a medium. At the age of 15 I fell in love and got married against my parent’s wishes, later convinced them.

Information about your family

Married in the year 2004 and given birth to 4 girl children, while pregnant for the fourth time my husband developed Hepatitis B with Multi organ failure and expired in 2014. I moved back with my last child and presently staying with my mother and sister. My first three children are taken care by my in laws.

What do you really enjoy doing in your spare time/for fun?

I love to add to my technical and educational skills. I attend training classes in typing and computer. I love to play with my child and spend time with her teaching; I spend my time giving driving lessons to my sister, if somebody needs help or assistance I love to do it.

How did you get involved in social justice work?

I know Dr.Meera for 4 years and loved listening to the work they do in communities, I expressed my desire to work in such organizations. My background being a young widow , I always and spontaneously react to the issues faced by the women and help them.

How did you get involved with HEAL?

Knowing Dr. Meera made several request to be part of the development work. Joined as a volunteer to understand the development work and then joined HEAL projet as a full time worker.

What is your favorite part about working with HEAL?

Working as a team, learning lessons from each other and making me feel comfortable while they teaching me; never ever felt that I am new comer. My most favorite thing in HEAL is complementing and coordinating each other.

What is your favorite/most meaningful memory of working in the communities?

My most meaningful memory is conducting socio- economic survey, talking to the families, learning and understanding their socio economic situation. Identifying the children and initiating school, playing and teaching rhymes are most memorable moments of the day.

Why do you enjoy what you do?

I enjoy helping people; meet their needs which were not possible as an individual. As an organization and team we are easily able to out reach and successful.

What do you believe is the key to really helping the poor and needy be successful and happy?

The key to really helping the poor and needy to be successful and happy is educating them, promoting awareness on all issues.

I was born and brought up in Hyderabad and did my schooling from government school.

Information about your family

I lost my husband in the year 2013; I have 3 children a daughter and 2 sons. My daughter is married and lives in Hyderabad. My elder son works as a fabricator and the younger as courier boy.

What do you really enjoy doing in your spare time/for fun?

I love gardening and enjoy planting sapling of flowers and fruits. I love playing and telling stories to my grand children and their friends, I love animals and feed many street dogs near my house and also try to protect them when some one throws stones at them. I enjoy spending time with senior citizens.

How did you get involved in social justice work?

I live very close to an old age home and orphanage which is in our neighborhood, I often visit them and help them in small way I can. I wait for the moment when I can go, spend my time in the old age home and orphanage.

How did you get involved with HEAL?

Bindu would often share her experiences with me about her work; as I was always interested in doing Social work and needed a job she introduced me to Dr.Meera and since one and a half year I am working in HEAL.

What is your favorite part about working with HEAL?

We live as a family, share our experiences, problems, I appreciate that each one respects and supports one another in field or group work. I have learnt many new health topics which I was unaware and now share them with my family and friends and makes me feel proud.

What is your favorite/most meaningful memory of working in the communities?

My most favorite incident that I cite is during our field visit an old lady wanted to water her plants in her backyard but was not able to lift the bucket, I went and helped her in lifting the bucket from the bore well and watered her plants she was so happy and as appreciation she gave me some homemade pickle (leaves which had been plucked from her garden) to eat for lunch and blessed our organization for their work in the area.

Why do you enjoy what you do?

When people lack resources like water, sanitation, pensions and helping them in getting from government and our organization is very satisfying. I enjoy of talking to them on Health issues and playing with children.

What do you believe is the key to really helping the poor and needy be successful and happy?

I believe that the key in helping the poor and needy is to understand their needs and help them by linking them to the resources. A correct information and motivation can also bring change in their lives.

Information about where you grew up, where you studied

I was born and brought up in a village; I completed my secondary education in a government school. In 2001 our pastor encouraged me to pursue studies in nursing.

Information about your family

I was married in the year 1982, me, my husband, my 2 sons and their families we all live together; I am blessed with 2 grand children.

What do you really enjoy doing in your spare time/for fun?

In my spare time I enjoy playing with my grand children, reading books and helping those who seek my assistance. I love gardening and enjoy planting sapling of flowers; I have variety of plants at home and spend my time tending them.

How did you get involved in social justice work?

I am leader of women groups in my area and many women come to me seeking help in their family matters. I counsel and advise them. Mary and I together have helped many people in getting their land tenureship and staged demonstration in government offices for getting basic facility for our area. I also worked as a counselor in Saco volunteer in DESH organization for women and child development program and working in municipality as a sanitation supervisor.

How did you get involved with HEAL?

As I was an active member in the church, our pastor was happy seeing my work and experience with other organization and he recommended me and Mary to Jordan and his team, we were given training for 1 month and was appointed as a health worker in HEAL.

What is your favorite part about working with HEAL?

I think working with HEAL is my privilege, I have learnt many lessons like coordination, understanding and trusting one another. HEAL Team and Dr.Meera explain us till we understand any topic, never we are discouraged, there are always words of appreciation and motivation.

What is your favorite/most meaningful memory of working in the communities?

My most memorable incident is when women from the area would call me every day and ask, whether they would be able to start a women thrift groups as their leaders are objecting, I had to repeatedly talk and convince the leaders that it will not affect their work and their leadership . With lot of hesitation the leaders agreed and in 2011 we were able to form women’s group. Now I receive phone calls thanking me for the initiative we had taken and now they are getting financial assistant from the government. From discouraging calls I used to get, are now calls of thanks which makes me feel proud and happy.

Why do you enjoy what you do?

I enjoy teaching health lessons, especially while conducting planned lesson with pre and post pregnant women, their expression, smiles and questions they put forward and answering them is very satisfactory.

What do you believe is the key to really helping the poor and needy be successful and happy?

I believe informing them about schemes, linking them to resources, encouraging parents to send their children to school mainly girl child as they say if mother is educated then whole family is educated is helping them in being successful and happy.

Information about where you grew up, where you studied

I was born in a village. At the age of 3 years due to misunderstanding between my parents, my mother left me and my elder brother in care of my paternal aunty. My aunty being an evangelist and a bible school teacher, she admitted us in Christian hostel till we finished our secondary education. In the year 2001 our church pastor encouraged me to do Bed Side Nursing from Reddy’s labs. In addition to nursuing I also studied and Learned counseling techniques

Information about your family

I was married at 17 years. Me, my husband, my elder son, his wife and 2 grand children and younger son live together, ours is a very close knit family. My daughter is married and lives in the same locality.

What do you really enjoy doing in your spare time/for fun?

As I am a leader of a women’s group near my house I enjoy educating them on various topics. Love to spend my free time with my grand children playing and telling stories. I love sewing and Crochets.

How did you get involved in social justice work?

Being a ward member of my locality I helped the residents in getting their land tenureship and basic facilities of the community. I worked as a volunteer in DESH organization for HIV/AIDS program, as a Family Counselor in Saco, volunteer in Mythri mahila Sangam (Police Dept) and sanitation supervisor.

How did you get involved with HEAL?

Our church pastor saw the work and commitment experience with other organizations and exposed to women issues our pastor introduced me and Vasanta to Jordan and his team; they gave me training on health lessons, and appointed me as a health worker.

What is your favorite part about working with HEAL?

Favorite parts about working with HEAL, has taught me how to deal with tough leaders in the communities, talking with government officials, Team work and trust in one another.

What is your favorite/most meaningful memory of working in the communities?

The most memorable memory is when 2 men working as watchmen and office assistant were removed from their work due to blurred vision, the family lost the primary source of income. At this point of time I have referred them for an eye surgery and after the surgery their vision was clear. I have taken them and spoke to their employers who happily have taken them back as watchmen and office assistant. Each and every time I see them there is a big smile on their face and gratitude expressing and showing their palm and tell that they are able to eat food only because of me.

Why do you enjoy what you do?

I enjoy motivating, teaching health lesson to the women in the community. They come to me seeking help in doing women’s group accounts which I enjoy explaining them.

What do you believe is the key to really helping the poor and needy be successful and happy?

I believe that through community empowerment process we can help the poor and needy by linking them to resources, helping them in procuring government schemes, providing vegetable seeds for their gardens are ways and means to become independent, happy and successful.

Information about where you grew up, where you studied

Born in Hyderabad and studied in Government School. With motivation received from SAPID I completed 2 years of my graduation in Arts and sociology through Open University. I have participated in surveys and studies and trained as a Health worker.

Information about your family

I was married at the age of 20 years and have a son and a daughter and they are married settled in Hyderabad. My husband died in the year 2007.

What do you really enjoy doing in your spare time/for fun?

Like to spend time reading spiritual books, spend time playing with children. There are lots of people who approach me and entrust some work which I happily do it. My favorite time pass is I feed lot of birds in the morning before I go for work and in the evening.

How did you get involved in social justice work?

I was involved in community development work and got associated with St.Theresa organization in the year 1993 to 1994, later from 1994 to 1999 worked as a teacher and counselor for Child labour Project. In 2000 Joined SAPID as Out reach Worker in health intervention.

How did you get involved with HEAL?

Introduced me and my work to Jordan and Heal team and his team has taken me as health worker in the year 2004.

What is your favorite part about working with HEAL?

My favorite of working with Heal team is it has a very cordial and convenient atmosphere. My most favorite is sharing my experiences with HEAL (US) team and the appreciation and encouragement I receive from them.

What is your favorite/most meaningful memory of working in the communities?

There are several memories to treasure my most meaningful memory is helping the senior citizen to get their pension, with their monthly pension they receive they able to spend a part on their grand children and with the remaining amount they are able to purchase medicines without being a burden on their children the immense joy on their face is most satisfactory. The pleasure of watching Women learning sewing skill with enthusiasm; at present they are stitching their own clothes and a few of them earning through sewing; which is an additional amount to their family earning.

Why do you enjoy what you do?

I enjoy educating the people because I feel they will pass the same message to other members of their community who are not available. Educating and motivating women to plan and save some amount for their children’s education and their future.

What do you believe is the key to really helping the poor and needy be successful and happy?

I believe that since we have few resources in our organization, we can provide support system like Training center, Entrepreneurship development in our communities and helping them towards a better and successful life.

Information about where you grew up, where you studied

Born and brought up in Hyderabad, completed my schooling and college in Hyderabad. I did my graduation in English Literature, Political science and History from Osmania University. I did MA sociology through distant education, trained as a counselor and Master trainer in Health Education and Life Skill Education.

Information about your family

Married in the yearn 1982, we are 4 members me, my husband, daughter and son. My daughter is married and settled in Bangalore. Both my Daughter and son are graduated in commerce. My marriage being inter religion (Me Hindu and my husband Christian) we had to face lot of criticism and discrimination, it took a year to convince my parents and other family members.

What do you really enjoy doing in your spare time/for fun?

There are many things that I do in my spare time but the best is reading books or scriptures as I want to do my masters in Theology. I love to play with the children in our apartment and teach them games which I played in my childhood, watching Comedy movies and cartoons are my stress buster.

How did you get involved in social justice work?

I was an active member in the church and always wanted to be a part of social justice events, seeing my enthusiasm the priest appointed me as a counselor. As a counselor dealt with 50 odd family matters and helped poor children in getting sponsorship from church.

How did you get involved with HEAL?

I joined SAPID as a counselor in the year 2000 and later was promoted as Project Manager for HIV/AIDS program. In 2004 when Jordan visited our office HEAL programs were introduced in Hyderabad since then I have been involved with HEAL.

What is your favorite part about working with HEAL?

My most favorite part is working as a Team, Sharing, Interaction and planning. The encouragement I get from HEAL Team (US) and Dr Meera keeps me going and thrive to achieve my Goals.

What is your favorite/most meaningful memory of working in the communities?

There are many memories down the lane; the success of forming the women’s group against all odds was biggest achievement. The twinkle in their eyes and smile on the women’s faces when they received their bank pass book and got financial assistant from the Government. There was an incident when we were drilling a bore in CPI colony, as the community faced lot of water problem due to lack of bore wells. The first gush of water from the ground the cheers and tears in the eyes of senior citizen and women really moved me, the blessing which they gave to the organization got for the work is most laudable. At the end of the day their smile brings satisfaction to me that at least I am able to bring smile on their faces.

Why do you enjoy what you do?

I love talking to the people in the community especially with senior citizen and children because I learn many life lessons from them. I also enjoy talking to women as they trust me and share their experiences; problems with me. I counsel them and try my best to solve their problems.

What do you believe is the key to really helping the poor and needy be successful and happy?

I believe Right to Information is foremost and important to them. Educating them, creating awareness through Community empowerment process and linking them to resources are stepping stones for their success.
